offers an alternative to the ‘traditional
model’ of having servers located in your
office, and your business applications installed
on each and every PC.
With the ‘traditional
model’ when a particular application runs,
it is running locally on your PC, and as such
its performance (whether it runs slow or fast)
is largely dependent on the age and specification
of your PC. Additionally, your business
data is typically located on a local server. This
allows you to securely share documents between
your co-workers. In addition, the data on
the server is backed up nightly to a tape system.
From an ongoing support perspective, you require
your server and PCs to be maintained.
Our hosted and managed desktop
service replaces this traditional way of working
by hosting your business applications and business
data in a purpose-built physically and environmentally
secure data centre. Just some of the benefits

this service, access to your business applications

known as thin-client technology.

THIN-CLIENT TECHNOLOGY |
As opposed to installing and
running applications physically on your local
PC, your business applications run in the memory
of a high performance server located in the data
centre. Your keyboard and mouse movement
on your local PC is redirected to the server in
the data centre. The server carries out your instruction
within its own memory – and simply re-directs
the screen display back to your PC.
There is a small piece of software
(known as a thin-client) that is installed on
your local PC that captures the keyboard and mouse
movement, sends it to the server in the data centre,
and then displays on your local PC screen what
the server in the data centre instructs it to
– i.e. the actual business application itself
never actually runs in the memory of your local
PC.
